Is there more on the moon then meets the eye?

The above two images are both presented on NASA as the exact same thing, yet show very different colors.

One may ask, what the point of pointing out this fact?  After looking at this next set of pictures, consider for your self if you think it is odd or not.

 This image from the 1972 Apollo 17 mission shows Commander Eugene Cernan on the moon, in his suit holding the American flag.  Note the strong colors of the American flag and the astronuat's suit then look at the bright washed out, featureless gray of the moon's surface. 

Here are some quotes about the moon's color on the surface, directly from the astronauts at the Bellcomm Apollo Debriefing.

"The lunar maria were described as brown at high sun angles, and grayish brown near the terminator..."

"....They noted a color mottling of Mare Serenitatis, light brown and tan brown, as compared to the darker 'chocolate brown' color of Mare Tranquillitatis."

"The color of the lunar highlands was described as tan .... Deviations from the tan color are caused by mare material (brown), fresh impact craters (chalky white) and a number of 'jet black' layers and blocks."

"As expected, they were unable to see much before passing over the sunlight terminator, but as soon as this is done, the moon glows at us...this moon looks like a Christmas tree here in the dark side...it is highly illuminated from the earth."

From these eye witness descriptions, one would think the moon, contrary to the color portrayed in the picture would be shades of tan or brown, not gray. 

Now lets take a closer look at the photo and zoom in on the reflection in the helmet.  Notice the yellow arrows pointing at some very odd looking shapes.  Note only two astronauts in identical suits were supposed to be on the mission Harrison Schmit and Eugene Cernan.  Do the shapes in this reflection look a little off to you?  The reflection seems to show more than one person standing behind the camera and one of them definitely does not look like something I've ever seen mentioned in an official source before.  What is that little man doing there?

So we have all the details and colors of the astronaut and flag, clear and crisp.  The moon was later described by the astronauts as having tan shades and in the reflection, that is quite clearly the case. Yet despite these facts, the moon surface in the background of this picture is a featureless gray wash.  How could this be?

It appears to me as if the image has been tampered with and the background is saturated to black and white then washed of details.   This picture is not the only NASA image that has highly suspicious details about it, in fact it is one of a large amount. Is something being hidden from us in this picture?  You decide...
